I (Diane) have been married now for almost a year. Our first anniversary will be July 2, 2009. When Juana and I got married, California had just legalized same-sex marriage. We had been planning to register as “domestic partners” but when the legalization took place, we took the plunge. We decided to go to the courthouse and get married there and have our reception at a later date. As it turned out, we are one of the 18,000 gay couples California currently recognizes as being legally married. Well, our reception is planned for October 3rd, and I’m obsessed with planning.
About us: We are both sporty types – not actually butch, but not dress wearers either. Juana is 1st-generation Mexican and, as she says, when you marry a Mexican, you marry the whole family. We refer to the family as the “whole enchilada” or “Verizon” (because I picture her ther with the whole crowd behind her like the commercials. I am a police officer and have known I was gay since high school. My family is pretty small, but family is important to both of us. Both sides of the family get along and are completely supportive of us.
Anyway, planning our party is a whole new concept for us. We have 220 on the guest list and are actually kind of hoping 25% decline the invitation. Neither one of us had ever previously thought about getting married and don’t really know what we’re doing. I am researching everything and trying to pull it all together. I enjoy the “So You’re Engayged” blogs and look forward to more.
