I had the pleasure of interviewing Christina Hill of cHill Weddings, and am totally inspired by her portfolio and rave reviews – be sure to read through to the end to see some spectacular wedding inspiration!

Tell me a bit about your business.

chill 1cHill Weddings specializes in multicultural events for the budget conscious. No matter the budget, we work hard to find the right vendors for the couple, in addition to incorporating cultural and other personal aspects into their wedding.

What do you love about what you do?

I love being a part of each couples special day. My job is never boring because every wedding planning process is unique! My favorite part of the planning is making everything come together the morning of the wedding – and knowing that the couple’s vision for their wedding has become a reality.

How did you get into doing what you do?

I enjoyed planing parties since I was a child, but never thought of making it a career. I was on a path to medschool, but after my wedding, I realized the importance of wedding planners and coordinators and decided to change careers. Soon after, I worked at high-end Philadelphia ballroom, and eventually started my own business in 2007.

What do you wear when you’re doing what you do?

For meetings, I wear anything from jeans to a suit, depending on my style for the day! For weddings, we all wear black dresses and accessorize with our favorite items. I personally prefer to work in cute flats, but I’m always amazed at how great my staff is in heels!

What’s unique about cHill Weddings?

In addition to coordination and planning, cHill Weddings has a great designer in-house who creates custom logos, seating charts, programs, and invitations. Everything is hand drawn so the design is unique in every way.

If you haven’t done a gay wedding, what would your dream gay wedding include?

I don’t particularly have a “dream gay wedding” since I view all weddings as unique and all equally special. But as with any wedding couple, I hope our first gay wedding will be filled with love between the couple, family, and friends. Of course, some fabulous details that are off the beaten path would be awesome!

Do you have a favorite “moment” that happens while you’re doing your job?

My favorite moment is usually when the couple is exiting the ceremony with all their guests celebrating. It’s so exciting to finally see the couple wed especially after many months of planning.

Rave and Picture time!

….Christina found vendors that matched our style AND or budget. She matched us with Andrew our photographer, Brown Betty our baker, Natalie for hair, Mila for makeup, Robert Ryans our caterer/venue, and Magical Sights & Sounds or DJ. I also probably threw her for a loop when I requested a filipino and korean dance troupe, but she delivered. That’s basically our entire wedding. What would i have done without her. Additionally, her and her team arranged our centerpieces with the flowers we provided. Could we have asked for anything more? – Christine, bride

….Christina herself was beyond exceptional, a pleasure to work with. She found me some great vendors and she did an amazing job decorating our reception (which was no small task). Her other assistant was amazing as well, sewing my dress in the middle of the reception when the bustle came out and it ripped. Christina always responded back quickly to every crazy email and was a pleasure to work with. She truly is one of the best wedding planners in the area. – Kristen, bride

Christina and her entire team are wonderful! Everything my fiance and I needed was taken care of in a timely and professional manner. She took care of everything from helping us select a venue for the wedding to checking us into our hotel on the night of our wedding!!! Christina is a pleasure to work with and takes care of even the smallest details! – Amber, bride

In regards to our wedding day, let me start off by thanking you and your staff for all your hard work. We absolutely loved what you and your staff did for our wedding. I can’t thank you and your staff enough for making our day go so smoothly. We are truly impressed by your professionalism and attention to detail. – Kassie and Martin, couple

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Heather Canada of First Coast Weddings and Events, Inc.. What’s most clear to be about Heather is that she cares about and gives 100% to all of her clients.

Please provide your business’ mission or vision statement.

First Coast Weddings and Events was founded in 2002 with the mission to create stylish, fun, and memorable weddings on Florida’s First Coast. We realize that every couple is unique, and every wedding should be too.

What do you love about what you do?

I love making every event unique, I think that any celebration, whether it is a wedding, birthday party, or even corporate event, should have it’s own identity and reflect the guest(s) of honor.

How did you get into doing what you do?

I have a degree in Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations. My original goal was to work for a corporation planning events like trade shows and media events. When I graduated from college, I took a job at a resort in Orlando to get some behind-the-scenes experience, and really loved it. When the hotel’s wedding specialist left her position, they asked me to take over, and I have been doing weddings ever since! When I moved to Jacksonville in 2001, I saw a real need for professional wedding planners, and I began doing research. I started First Coast Weddings and Events in 2002!

What do you wear when you’re doing what you do?

My office attire tends to be business casual – I like to look professional, but part of the joy of business ownership is setting my own rules! At events, I tend to wear black so that I blend in with the background – but I usually try to throw in a little accent of the wedding colors somewhere!

What’s a tip you’d give to current couples planning their weddings?

I urge everyone to do their research when hiring any event professional – ask questions about their portfolio, call/email past clients, and ask for references from other vendors too.

If you have worked at a gay wedding, what is one thing you had to change your assumptions about?

I find that gay weddings are usually more moving and sentimental than heterosexual weddings. It’s weird, but men and women (women especially) tend to plan a wedding exactly like their friends or sisters or mothers. They want everything to look like it is from a bridal magazine. My gay couples tend to be more unique in their thinking, and they have such obstacles to overcome in their lives that they want their day to really reflect their love – not just be a great party.

Do you have a favorite “moment” that happens while you’re doing your job?

My favorite moment comes at the end of the night – as the couple is getting ready to leave the reception, and they hug me and tell me how much fun they had. That is always my goal; I want them to relax and enjoy the day, not be stressed out!

Rave time!

“I had the most wonderful experience working with First Coast Weddings & Events! The professionalism and wealth of knowledge about wedding trends and vendors was priceless. I feel as though I lost a friend after our wedding planning ended!” – Kimberly, bride

“I just wanted to thank you so much for all your hard work!!! (and your assistant of course!!) Everything was perfect and I could not have asked for a more beautiful wedding!! It really was great having you there and thank you so much for doing such a fantastic job! I really felt like you had everything under control and I didn’t even think about any of the details, which was great…and neither did our Moms which is always a good thing!! ;) Thank you again, and we could not have done it without you!” – Liz, bride

“You are fabulous! You are calming and soothing and always knew the answers to my questions! I am so happy I made the decision to have you as my wedding planner! In the future, if I need your services again, I will not hesitate to call!” – Linda, mother of the bride

I first met Myra Lewis at a wedding in 2008, and she and her team were absolutely amazing. It was a large wedding with many moving parts, but they all kept things under control and seemingly without breaking a sweat! :) You can tell that Myra and her staff and take pride in their work, and always strive exceed their clients’ expectations. As she says, “When it comes to planning the most important day in your life, we believe that you only get to do it once, so we have to do it right!”

img_0253aTell us about your business’ mission or vision statement.

Expectations is a unique wedding & event management company specializing in affordable, professional and reliable event coordination services. We understand that love is in the details and take care of every element of your special event to reach perfection. We work with our clients to create events that fit their taste, and most importantly, their budget. We offer various levels of services and customized packages to meet our clients’ needs. Our passion for planning and attention to detail give our clients the piece of mind needed to enjoy their most special day.

What do you love about what you do?

I love the fact that I get to be a part of two people’s most important day of their lives. It is such a great feeling to spend months working on a project, and then seeing the pieces of the puzzle come together. I also love that no two events are ever the same. The couples, themes, and guests are different, which keeps us on our toes to create unique and memorable events.

How did you get into doing what you do?

I have always been the “planner” in my family, and love to celebrate special occasions. In my senior year of college, I took the Wedding Planning course that was being offered for the first time at my university. I received the highest grade of all students taking the course. I realized my passion for planning, and the need for affordable event coordination services. I become a Certified Bridal Consultant, and opened my business in 2006.

What do you wear when you’re doing what you do?

My staff usually wears black suits with turquoise tops, (our business colors). We wear clothes that we can move around in, as our job sometimes requires us to be on our hands and needs, as well as moving items throughout the event.

If you haven’t coordinated a gay wedding, what would your dream gay wedding be?

I love personalized and intimate celebrations! My dream gay wedding would be working with clients that have great style, attention to detail, and most important, that the couple is truly in love with each other, which is the most important item needed when planning a wedding :)

Do you have a favorite “moment” that happens while you’re doing your job?

My favorite moment is when the couple is announced to their guests for the first time, and when they share in their first kiss. In that moment there are no cares in the world, and you can feel their nervousness and stress replaced with happiness, and excitement for what is to come.

Rave and picture time!

“Myra and her team were exceptional. With only 4 months to plan a wedding for 100 people, Myra helped us create an elegant yet informal wedding that was truly fun and special for everyone involved. Even our guests commented on how professional, respectful, and helpful the team was — and I couldn’t agree more.” – Jennifer married 05/08

“Wow, where do I begin? Myra was amazing to work with. She was my day of coordinator and went above and beyond in every way. I told her how dear my grandmother is to me and she checked on her every half hour. I had a very detailed vision for the venue and she made it look better than I dreamed it would.” – Becca married 09/08

“They really do stand by the name of their planning company because they “exceeded my expectations”. That day was perfect and she kept me calm assuring me that she would take care everything and she really did! I was able to enjoy my event knowing that I was in good hands with her and her staff.” – Selena married 11/08

“Knowing that everything was in their capable hands meant that I could relax, spending time with family before the wedding rather than worrying about all the details.” – Meredith married 10/08

“I initially hired her based on her affordable rates, and I have to say that she and her team were one of the best investments I made for my wedding day.” – Lindsey married 10/08

Bernadette Smith, President of It’s About Time Events, runs a business and blog dedicated to producing beautiful, meaningful and memorable events that are a vehicle for social change. It’s About Time is the nation’s first business specializing in the planning of legal gay and lesbian weddings. Bernadette has planned over 70 weddings!

What do you love about what you do?

My clients. I meet so many wonderfully diverse and interesting couples. It’s a joy to be invited into their lives as they are planning a once in a lifetime experience. I also love the variety of tasks and projects that are part of the job description of a wedding and event planner – everything from contract negotiation to event design and emotional support. The variety is fun and keeps me on my toes.

How did you get into doing what you do?

My company is the only company in the country that specializes in planning legal same-sex weddings. We were the first and remain the only company with this niche. I opened my business soon after same-sex marriage was legalized in Massachusetts in November 2003. I was open for business a few months later and the first legal same-sex weddings in the US happened on May 17, 2004.

Event planning had always been a part of my job description for other organizations and the rallies opposing same-sex marriage in late 2003 and early 2004 provided me with the inspiration and motivation to offer a wedding planning service to same-sex couples.

What do you wear when you’re doing what you do?

Day of event, I wear a business suit. In meetings I typically wear nice jeans, an oxford and a blazer.

Tell me about the industry, and why it’s hard out there for same-sex couples.

Weddings are still a very heterosexist industry and part of my job is to be an advocate for my clients – not only helping them with logistics and details but with personal decisions and ensuring their continual comfort level.

I have worked many gay weddings and the thing I am continually telling clients is that this is their opportunity to have a wedding that reflects their own values, personality and style. This is about them, not about anyone else, and there are no traditions they must adhere to. They can create their own traditions.

Do you have a favorite “moment” that happens while you’re doing your job?

Two favorite moments:

1) When I am taking clients on venue visits in the very early stage of planning and they walk into a space, look at each other with wide eyes and know they’ve found the place in which they’ll marry. They always get giddy with excitement. It’s fun.

2) The wedding ceremony. That’s what it’s truly all about – the ceremony, the legitimization and legalization of their relationship. I love ceremonies that are very personal, officiated by someone who knows the couple and speaks in a very heartfelt way.

Rave time!

“This will be our easiest thank you card to write because we have no shortage of great things to say about you! You were a dream to work with – fun, chill, yet professional enough to get stuff done and crack the whip when needed. We both decided that our wedding was the funnest we’d ever been to, 100% awesome.” – Tina and Ariadne

“Thank you so much for assisting us in bringing our dream of getting married to a reality. We got so many compliments from family and friends on the wedding and we owe it all to you! The whole day was wonderful and well planned – thank you for all your hard work!” – Joan and Cecilia

“Rest assured that I’ll be recommending you to anyone who needs a planner. We’ve been telling everyone how thrilled we were with the way things went off, and how we know that wouldn’t have happened without you. All the STRESS of the event went away, because it was so clearly under control. Thanks again.” – Tim and Cooper

Laura Auer runs Wish Special Events, one of the premier wedding coordination companies in the Washington DC area. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Laura and I can’t even begin to describe how incredible she is at wedding coordination, how calm and easy she is to work with, and how well she puts her clients at ease! Seriously, I haven’t seen a more relaxed couple on a wedding day than when I worked with Laura. Wish’s reviews on Wedding Wire speak for themselves.

What’s the main goal of Wish Special Events?

Laura Auer, Wish Special EventsOur goal is to ensure the couple, our clients, have a stress-free wedding day. We specialize in wedding day coordination but can very easily provide additional planning services if the couple needs a little more help during the engagement. Our role on the wedding day is to set up the ceremony and reception decorations, get the ceremony started on time in an organized fashion, and run the logistics of the reception between the many vendors working simultaneously. In a few quick words, we provide peace of mind to the newlyweds and their families.

What do you love about what you do?

My clients are people who are in a happy point in their lives. They have found the love of their life, that person feels the same way, and they have decided to make things permanent. Therefore I get to be constantly surrounded by smiling faces, cheerful personalities, and open hearts. It doesn’t take much to love this job.

What do you wear when you’re doing what you do?

I’m very lucky to be able to work out of my home office. There are some days when I don’t leave the house except to run personal errands. My standard uniform is a pair of well-worn jeans and a t-shirt. On wedding days, that all changes. I wear a wrap-around black shirt-dress at events. It’s formal enough to blend in with the guests but also durable enough that I can climb around on the floor and tape down lighting cables if necessary. The best part is that it has pockets for my cell phone, timeline, and pen…my three essential tools for the big day.

Do you have a favorite “moment” that happens while you’re doing your job?

My favorite moment is when the newlyweds walk back up the aisle after just exchanging vows. I am quite lucky to be the first to wish them congratulations. Seeing the sparkle in their eyes and the love they have for one another is simply moving.

If you haven’t worked at a gay wedding, what would your “dream” gay wedding details include?

Gay weddings to me don’t seem that much different in terms of the planning or the decor as opposed to heterosexual weddings. I do have one idea for any type of wedding that I would love to see… the ceremony being performed by the couple’s parents. The couple would turn and face their guests instead of having their backs to the audience. The parents would stand at their seats and each recite a piece of the ceremony (ie: the vows, the exchange of rings, the blessing, etc). I think this is a wonderful symbolism and really shows the combination of two families creating a new family. I almost wish I had thought of it in time for my own wedding!
