Yes, we have a wedding planner

Sometimes I feel a little silly about being a couple of feminist homosexuals with a wedding planner. Honestly, sometimes I feel a little bit silly about how obsessed I am about this wedding in general. I think insecurity is going to be a theme for me here, by the way.  I feel incredibly lucky to be able to plan the party we’re planning. And while it’s not so pricey by the standards of weddings, it’s the most expensive thing I’ve ever bought besides my education. And I’m not even paying for most of it! (George and I are lucky to have generous parents.)

But, despite my sheepishness about the impracticality of having a wedding like this in the first place, hiring our planner, Tammy, was the most practical thing we’ve done. Planning the rehearsal dinner (aka the welcome bbq), the ceremony, the cocktails, the dinner, and the post-wedding brunch would have been like a full-time job. She also has a million ideas I would never have thought of, despite my wedding blog obsession.

I love that I don’t have to worry about tent rental, linens, silverware, glasses, plates, the toilet trailer, the dance floor, arranging tables and chairs, a fire pit, blankets and snacks for the after party (the after party!), keeping everyone on schedule, parking, etc. Even more, I love having a professional in charge. Throwing a $30,000 party is a big deal in and of itself, but doing so when you’ve never thrown a party with a budget of more than, say, $100 is a recipe for an incredible amount of pressure. I’m a total Type A perfectionist to begin with. Add to that the fact that I’m an artist for whom even the shape of the jars of honey we’re giving for favors has symbolic value, and you have a recipe for a miserable wedding day, not to mention a miserable year of planning.

George is always trying to get me to relax and put less pressure on myself. It’s not easy for me at all. But having a planner I trust has been a lifesaver for me, and probably for our relationship too. Right George?

Yay for tammy! I briefly emailed with her because I was looking into some venues in that area a few months ago! You’ll love having a planner. :)
