Making Paper Flower Pomanders
13 Oct
In the beginning, I wanted to DIY the flowers. Flowers weren’t a priority for either of us, so I figured why spend a bunch of money on them? I thought we could order organic blooms wholesale, and spend the days leading up to our wedding making simple arrangements. Hanging out with family while putting flowers together sounds like fun, no? But when I told my mom, she didn’t like it. She was afraid we would be stressing over flowers instead of enjoying everyone’s company. For her own wedding, with the help of my grandfather, she made fabric flowers because that’s what they could afford. We still have the bouquets and, to me, they are the coolest heirlooms. I’m planning to use the lace from my mom’s bouquet to tie my own together. But my mom thinks the best gift she can think to give me is real, beautiful arrangements. Meanwhile, I’m thinking that arranging the flowers ourselves is more practical, and would make the whole experience more special. But, I could see what she meant about the stress, so I gave in on the flowers, and started looking at florists.
Then, this week I found the perfect solution to my flower angst!
We are still planning to hire a florist, but I found a great DIY project on Something Old, Something New for paper flower pomanders. You make a variety of paper flowers, and then hot glue them to paper lanterns to make these cool flower balls. Wouldn’t big flower balls look great hanging over the dance floor? I told my mom about it and she loves the idea! We are going to make the flowers together over my trips home, and my mom will house them in Maryland until the wedding. I’m really excited to be making something for the wedding with my mom, just like she did for her own wedding with my grandfather before he passed. I think it will be a great opportunity to bond over the wedding without the possible stress of doing all of the flowers ourselves the day before.

I’ll post pics as soon as we get started!

I cannot wait to see this. Were you planning on lighting them up?
Ms. Sparrow- I wasn’t thinking I would since the space already has spotlights over the dance floor, but it wouldn’t hurt to experiment with it, right?
Also, my parents visited the museum and saw our (potential)wedding space this weekend. They loved it, and said it was the funkiest place ever. Can’t wait to tour it next month!
I was asking cause I think glowing things are pretty, but also cause I was thinking of making clouds out of quilt batting and sticking a light in them. However I am a little iffy on the sticking a light in part.
Also I think most of the instruction I have seen for pomanders have been for using styrofoam balls instead of paper lanterns. I like the paper lanterns better, I just had never thought of using them before.
Hmmm…glowing things are pretty…that could look really cool, especially against the stark brick barn, you’re awesome! I love the cloud idea!
Um, as your beloved photog I absolutely INSIST you do this! Great idea!
I saw the clouds at a restaurant and knew I wanted them. My only hang up is that batting only comes in white (I think) and white clouds in a white tent isn’t very exciting.
I think even if you don’t do lit up pomanders during the wedding you should take a picture when you are making them so we can all oooh about it (or at least me).
