Introducing a New Blogger: Erica

Erica

I followed my love across an ocean. And when I say ‘I followed my love across an ocean,’ I mean that it was never planned and it truly was that romantic. I knew Alex for three years at college, but it finally took a candlelight kiss one night two months before she was set to move to steal my heart.  After dancing in the kitchen to Nina Simone, I knew I was falling in love. With a note from our Santa Cruz housemate starting “Dear LoveFest…” we had a name. And then she moved back to England, our university careers completed, and I moved to Los Angeles. Over exactly a year to the day, we wrote letters, sent packages, supported and giggled and titillated each other on long distance phone conversations until she came home to California for Christmas 2008 and moved me to London with her.

All along I was planning, and on April 12, 2009, I proposed to my love, Alexandra. What can I say? I’m unashamed in my romanticism. And despite my occasional pangs of feminist and activist consciousness (which I am always thankful for: questioning is a good thing), I am absolutely ecstatic about marrying Alex and the prospect of throwing two beautiful, feminist, queer, eco-conscious, people-oriented, down-right-dancing weddings/civil partnerships/commitment ceremonies. That’s right, I did say two weddings. As if one wedding wasn’t enough to worry about, Alex and I have decided we want to dance in our honour on two continents and two countries: England and the US. April 2010 is her break from her post-graduate degree and October is my favorite month in California, so April and October 2010 it is.

So far our priorities are: champagne, strawberries, hand-made napkins, second-hand vases, and cream, lots of cream.
