Em and I have seen a lot of save the dates since our engagement nearly two years ago.  We’ve seen a lot of creative designs that we really like including some that we have received from friends that are still hanging on the refrigerator.  We wanted our save the dates to be something that people would be able to easily display while also being unique.

We decided to design either a magnet or post card.  When contemplating our design, we immediately thought of our friend Gary.  Gary is a coworker of mine and an amazing artist.  He has a way of creating cartoon drawings of people that really capture the essence of the person.  We decided that we would ask him to design a postcard for us, rather than a magnet, so that it could be more detailed.

We sat down with Gary and discussed what types of things we wanted to incorporate into our design.  Since our wedding theme includes cherry blossoms, we decided to place ourselves in an outdoor setting surrounded by cherry blossom trees.  We put ourselves walking along a red brick road to symbolize the path we are headed on along with our cat, Alex.

We wanted the save the date to represent us as much as we could, so we had Gary draw us in some of our favorite articles of clothing, including Em’s favorite Pumas and me in my Chuck Taylors that I’m wearing in the wedding.  Em is in school, which is a big part of her life right now, hence the backpack in the grass.  Since I enjoy biking, we had Gary draw my bike leaning against a tree.  We had Gary put a star of David on Em’s side of the picture to represent her religion and I’m wearing a shirt with a Buddha on it to represent my values.  He even carved our names into the trees in the background.

We couldn’t be happier with how they came out!  Gary did an amazing job and while some of the detail is a little hard to see on the postcard, he captured not only our essence but Alex’s as well.  We ordered our post cards from Vistaprint and they look great.  The only thing we would have done differently is ordered a few less.  We weren’t thinking about all of the couples we were inviting and ended up ordering almost twice as many as we actually needed.
