Here are the facts:
- My partner is butch.
- She will be wearing a rented tux to our wedding due to budgetary constraints.
- She has never worn a tux before.
- She hates being hot (wearing lots of layers of clothes).
- This is going to be more difficult than I though.
Thank goodness for the internet because I was able to read and forward along several blog posts to her about the suit/tux shopping process. Early on I tasked her best man with the suit shopping because we were going to try and keep what we’re wearing a secret from one another until the big day, but….they went to a suit shop and there were too many questions about dress shirt style, vest and jacket, so now I have to pick the pattern of vest and the color of the groomsmen vest/tie and she’ll do the rest.
She tried on a tux this past weekend and now knows a few things – what type of shirt looks good on her, that she’ll need some cuff links, there were several different kinds of jackets, how to make the groomsmen look different from her and that she’ll be most comfortable/cool in a vest that will flatter her figure and make her boobs look as flat as possible. It was great for her to have her best man there with her because he asked her a ton of questions in a very loving and supporting manner. I can’t wait to see her waiting for me at the altar!!
FYI – The articles I forwarded along to my partner and her best man were – a short one I found onThe Huffington Post, this awesome post on SYE, and of course this one written by S. Bear Bergman on Offbeat Bride. There’s actually a whole website devoted to lesbian wedding outfits on a blog called What to Wear to your Queer Wedding.

So exciting to hear a tux success story!!
Thanks so much for sharing this! I love to hear what the “other” side has to stay about this issue!
We’ll see if we can call it a ‘success’ in a few months. Stay tuned!
