We totally lucked out with our wedding dessert.  It just so happens that Bek’s brother’s girlfriend is a gourmet cupcake maker.  Um, yeah.  Pretty freakin’ awesome.  She makes the most incredible cupcakes you ever did see and taste.  And, we get to keep it in the family- Bonus!

Vanilla/Almond Marble Cupcakes with Bourbon Buttercream, Dutch Chocolate Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream, and Caramel Apple Pie Cupcakes

As soon as we started talking about what we wanted cake-wise, it took all of about 2 seconds to decide we wanted her company, Cupcake Monster, to be in charge of the sugar portion of the event.  We had initially thought about doing an ice-cream bar instead of more traditional cake things, but the logistics of it just didn’t feel worth it.  Cake is just easier to serve and store.

Mexican Hot Chocolate Cupcakes, Spiced Apple Cider Cupcakes, and Chai Tea Latte Cupcakes

Now we just have to pick flavours!  She has some crazy-fantastic stuff on the menu, it’s a little overwhelming.  Not to mention that she has told us she can do pretty much anything in the world that we want.  Yikes.  So were stuck trying to decide if we want some sort of flavour that’s “meaningful” to us (like Peanut Butter Banana, Coconut, or Caramel Apple Pie), unique and exciting (like Chai Tea Latte, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Cashew Butter Cardamom, or Ricotta Orange), or play-it-safe crowd pleasers (like Black Forest, Carrot Cake, Dutch Chocolate, or Vanilla).  And we’ve also dreamed up some awesome ones on our own, like Rootbeer Float and Spiced Pumpkin Pie.  Yummm.

"CoCo FroYo" Cupcakes, Black n' Blueberry Fudge Cupcakes (Gluten-Free Special), and "Red Forest" Cupcakes (Red Velvet Cupcakes with Black Forest Cherry Kirsch Filling and Cream Cheese

And thankfully we can have both vegan and gluten-free ones too.  We have some guests with very severe allergies, and others with dietary restrictions or preferences that it’s important to us to accomodate.

We’ve spent WAY more time debating flavours for our cupcakes than we have spent talking about our dinner menu!  But sugar’s the best part, right?  I am way more looking forward to these goodies than anything else we’ll be serving at the wedding.

Anyone having any fun ideas about presentation?  I’m thinking of making my own stand for them, something in keeping with our art-deco-cocktail-party type style?

Fluffernutter!

I am amazed by the apple pie cupcakes. The lattice crust on top looks amazing and all the flavors sound incredible. I have no idea how you are going to decide. I think I would end up with 10 flavors. I have seen some really cool cake stands either at target, if you wanted to buy it, or design sponge has a really easy looking tutorial.

Yay for fab cupcakes! I’ve been saying for months now that my biggest regret from our wedding was that I didn’t eat more cupcakes :). If you go back to the posts of my wedding you’ll see them (my gourmet aunts made them starting at 4am that morning… I later found out that they had spent $400 on the ingredients… No woder they were so good!) Oh man… My mouth is watering just thinking about them again. Mmmmmm. I made our cupcake stands too. I decided that I didn’t like the look of the giant stands, but I liked how cupcakes looked spread out over a table at different levels… Some on a plate, some on two tiered stands and you’re eye drawn to one three tiered stand. In the end I was really happy with the look (and the taste!). I made our smaller stands by gluing thrift store old fashioned ice cream sundae cups to the bottom of thrift store glass plates. They were fine looking, not gorgeous, but it didn’t matter because they weren’t the focus of the table and you couldn’t really see them. I made the big stand with three different sized glass cake plates from Pier One glued together (I think I used guerilla glue). One of my students had given me a gift card to Pier One — so it was free! In the end I think it looked pretty fab. It DEFINITELY tasted fab… Oh… I’m jelous that you still have your wedding cupcakes ahead of you!
