Well, Alex and I couldn’t really get married without strawberries…and bubbly. Way back when I started blogging for SYE, strawberries and champagne were already on the list! Thus, promptly after we were announced as legal civil partners, we led the party down to the Fowey Hotel Tea Gardens for a brief reception and a little sunshine.
For about an hour, we mingled, dropped strawberries in our glasses, posed for personal group photos (Hag Do reunion above there!) and got to enjoy the absolutely gorgeous British weather! (Seriously, the Icelandic volcano may have stopped a few people from making the party, but while the wind patterns shut down British air space they brought us brilliant sunshine!) With hungry stomachs, we made our way back inside the hotel for Cornish cream tea…
Scones with strawberry jam & Cornish clotted cream, sandwiches, tea and coffee–Alex and I were definitely first in line. Basically: YUM. We had a selection of gluten & dairy free trays as a few family members and friends need a ‘free from’ diet, and everyone tucked in with enthusiasm! Our Best Men also made an announcement for our guest book, so that people could write us a postcard while they enjoyed their tea.
So we went back outside to another garden after tea for group & family photos, and then Alex and I snuck off for some other photos (to come in a later post). While we were away, our guests were relaxing on the lawn and chatting. And starting to get really comfortable. And then a little sleepy. For my brother, the energy needed a bit of picking up. Being a river raft guide during the summers, Paul took command of the group and organized a game of ‘Hi-Ya!’ The rules of which involve a lot of yelling and karate-chopping–and laughter. Talk about in the moment brilliance!
Then we were back inside again (writing it out, it feels like a lot of movement, but it really did make sense on the day!). Due to volcanic interference, my dear friend and scheduled-storyteller, Clare, couldn’t make it over from Ireland. Amazingly, we have another family friend who is a storyteller, so Will told a Cornish story around the phrase ‘Kissing is out of fashion when the Gorse is out of bloom.’ He had us captivated, and we were so thankful for how graciously he stepped up to tell with only a day’s notice!
And then the Town Crier arrived…
