From Nia and Liza: Our wedding could probably be described in three words: New England preppy. We wanted something fairly traditional, but with enough unique touches to make it feel like “us”. Since Nia is a history teacher, holding the wedding at a museum just felt apropos. We even shuttled people there in a school bus. We tried to keep everything pretty clean and simple, focusing on our guests and enjoying the day!

Our ceremony was quite personal, thanks to our officiant’s help and hard work, and then we just had a great time with all of the most important people in our lives. It was Nia’s grandmother’s birthday, so we had everyone sing to her (there are great photos of us hugging her, and her in a dance circle). All in all, we just really had fun and lived in the moment!

We had a great “us” moment during the ceremony when Nia repeated the vows with a slight mistake – “in front of MY friends and family” – and Liza corrected her to say – “in front of OUR friends and family”. We all devolved into laughter, and I think we totally relaxed after that.

Our favorite serious moment of the wedding was the father-daughter dance and then dancing with each-other’s father- probably Nia’s favorite photo of the day.

Nia made really great table signs using the names of places that are important to us and our relationship. She printed the names in navy on vellum and used white card stock as the backing. She then punched holes to run a thick periwinkle ribbon (our wedding color along with navy) through the holes to secure the vellum. She then used hot glue to secure the ribbons artistically to to the vellum, and the whole card was placed in a tall table number stand. A navy photo frame on each table held an explanation of why the name was chosen. Heather has photos, and we do too.

We had a really wonderful, thoughtful officiant who walked us through the process. She walked us through a lot of options but kept a good portion a surprise for us, which was really nice. She spent a few solid minutes just talking about us and our relationship. It was important to us that a portion of the Goodrich decision (the MA Supreme Court legalizing marriage equality) be read before we finalized our marriage certificate. Nia’s brother read it, and that was a very meaningful moment.
