Thanks to Kiso Fotografia for sending over the wedding.

We wanted our wedding to be a blend of tradition and novelty and a mixture of formality and casual style. The ceremony, complete with tuxes, attendants, and seated audience, took place outside on the Scioto River with downtown Columbus as the backdrop. It was a family affair. David’s sister officiated and we drew on a number of secular traditions to create a short, but meaningful service. It was framed by a cello solo by David’s brother—classical renditions of some of our favorite pop songs. Nature was kind and pushed the thunderstorms to the east of the city giving us an even more dramatic backdrop.
We held the reception at the same venue in the North Bank Park pavilion, just steps from the river ceremony cite. Our colors—lime, magenta, and cerulean—evoked breezy summer cheer. The meal represented a blend of Bryan’s Georgian and David’s Texan culinary traditions—with highlights like pecan-crusted chicken, fried green tomatoes, and barbeque brisket. We kept it formal with assigned seating for guests but added casual elements of a buffet. We continued the traditions of (egalitarian) cake-cutting and mother-son dance. But we made it hip with dance music inspired more by club mixes than by your traditional wedding fare.
We knew early on that we didn’t want traditional marriage vows. And in our search for the right words we quickly realized that it would be more meaningful to write our vows together. We a number of different secular traditions and ended up with something that felt like us. Our ceremony was even more special because we were able to have David’s sister officiate!
Moments after our ceremony, we were able take a stroll, just the two of us, along the riverfront. We hadn’t seen each other since the morning of our wedding and we didn’t get much alone time after that stroll. But for those few steps, we were able to really absorb the moment and realize the significance of the day.
Our favorite design would definitely have to be the colors. We chose cheerful linens in lime and magenta and flowers of blue hydrangeas that reflected both the season and our personalities. Bright and bubbly pops of color made our reception venue really come alive. It was all topped off with our favorite view of downtown Columbus. Our advice to readers is to go with what you like. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the magazines and trends, but on the day you’ll be happier if you make the little decisions based on what the two of you really love!
