Thanks so much to the amazing Nasilele Photography for submitting this engagement session. In order to protect this couple for military reasons, we will only be using their initials. Another reason we should be working hard to repeal ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’.

On 19 September, 2008. We met at the end of the documentary screening, “black./womyn.:conversations” at the Center in NY. We were both outside with our best friends at the time and Fate/circumstance led all four of us deciding to hang out together for the night. A drink or 7 needed to be had, it was a rough week! We tried to go to Cubbyhole and that didn’t pan out so we ended up at a bar called Rubyfruit. R and I hit it off, we talked as we were walking to the bar about just about everything. My bestie decided that she was tired and wanted to go home, but I wanted to dance. So I suggested hopping over Henrietta’s, and that’s what we did and we danced danced danced. When it was time to go she asked for my number, I gave it to her, but as with most things in NY I figured she wouldn’t call. So when I received a text checking to see if I got home alright, I was intrigued and a bit stunned.

One of our anniversaries,(the day that I told her I would be her girlfriend) 23 Nov 2009, she planned a great night. I was gobsmacked when the question came, because I figured that we were just going to dinner. So how it went. She came to my job to pick me up, normal, and brought me a change of clothes, odd but not really I wear jeans to work and it’s not the proper attire for a fancy dancy restaurant. I changed and we left, we started walking to central park, she told me,” Tonight we will do some old things, and some new things. But we will have a good time no matter what.” When we got to the park she asked if I would like to go on a carriage ride. I said sure, and then began to talk about how I would have never done this if she hadn’t suggested it because I thought it was touristy and a bit of cruelty to animals.

We finished the ride through the park, and she informed me that she forgot the camera at my job. We had time so we went back to get it. We then hoped on the subway and ended up across the street from the Center where she made me retell her the story of how we met. When I was finished we crossed the street, I thought we were going in but she stopped short. She began to say all of these wonderful words about how she felt and how much she loved me and more that have all evaporated into my soul. She reached her hand into her left coat pocket, and I threw my hands up to my face and began to cry and walk away. She had to grab my arm and pull me back. I was saying, “NO you can’t…” because she hadn’t talked to my parents. But she had, she asked me to be her wife and I said “Yes!!!”. She then told me to call home they were expecting it.
I cried to my mother while in the back of a cab on my way to who knew where. We ended up at the restaurant where we had our first date and at the back table were our closest friends. It was the perfect night!!
