Yay for DC’s Christina and Meigh engagement session! With DC gay marriage now legal, they are planning to get married this year :) Maggie Mudd Photography sent over this sweet session, so enjoy!
Christina and I met at a mutual friend’s Stitch n’ Bitch in the beginning of 2006, but we didn’t get together until I invited her to a house party that May. The fates conspired with a whirlwind of unsuitable suitors, artfully spilled drinks and bedroom intruders (seriously, there is no way we’re going to be able to tell our kids how we got together), but we sort of accidentally ended up a couple after that night. It was kind of a surprise to both of us, I think, since neither of us were out looking to find The One. We’d both had some less than stellar past relationships, so we probably took the most glacial, completely backward route to the altar possible, with lots of conversations that went something like, “Oh, I’m not looking for anything serious, I in no way am totally in love with you, wait, what?”
Once we (finally) figured out that this was going to be a forever-type situation, we went and looked at rings together with a breezy sort of, “oh, if *someone* were going to buy me some very nice jewelry, *this ring here* would be splendid” kind of feeling. So, telling everyone but each other (seriously, *all* our friends knew we were planning to propose to each other, but they’re very good secret keepers) we each separately went out and bought a ring.

I was still kind of waiting for her to ask though, since I had been ready to get married before she was, and I wanted her to be sure. So her ring sat in my lingerie drawer for about three weeks (our timing was pretty close, actually) and then she had my best friend (who has a way better poker face than I ever imagined) take me shopping while she cleaned and made a fantastic dinner. I came traipsing back in, totally oblivious, showed off my thrift store finds, and flopped into a chair. She kept trying to get me to go downstairs to see how she cleaned the basement, and I was like, “what, now? I’m sure it’s a very pretty basement.” She finally got me to go downstairs and she had candles lit, and she had hand-knit me a little monkey with a tiny crochet ring (she calls me monkey, yes, we’re way too cute) and a sign asking me to marry her.
There were tears (me), giggling (her) and smooching, and I don’t think I’ve ever been speechless in my life, but I was so surprised that it was probably 5 minutes before I remembered to actually say yes. So we went back upstairs to have dinner and copious amounts of champagne (Christina was a girl scout, she comes prepared) and all the time I’m thinking about her ring upstairs and how the hell I’m going to surprise her back. I dropped a bunch of comments over dinner to the effect of how she needed a ring now, and we should go out and get one the next day. Then, a couple hours later, when she was least expecting it, I took the super-sneaky (and okay, super-cheesy) method of slipping it into her champagne glass. So, November 7th, we proposed to each other, and we’re getting (legally, go DC!) hitched in May of next year.

“Oh, I’m not looking for anything serious, I in no way am totally in love with you, wait, what?”
This cracked me up in an all too familiar way. Congratulations! Such a great story, and you both look like you can’t stop smiling. It’s clear that your future will be full of love and lots of laughter!
Congrats you two. A beautiful proposal to match a super cute couple.
