Tom and I just decided on a date and location for our civil ceremony! We plan to be legally wed in New Haven, CT on September 7th at noon. This date came up pretty sudden because it is the only day that both of us are able to take off from work to travel to CT. And even though we originally didn’t want to make a big deal about it because we wanted to treat it more like paperwork than a wedding, after choosing a date and deciding who we wanted to bring along for the tying of the knot we started to get really, really excited to the point that we are now treating it like a separate little wedding anyway. Shh.
Here is what I mean:
- Since I cannot get the cake of my dreams for Mexico, we ordered it for the civil ceremony to eat on the steps/in the park
- Anne, one of the members of our wedding party is purchasing boutonnieres for us
- Christina, one of the members of our wedding party is bringing champagne for a toast
- Kelly Prizel will be photographing it
With all this exciting last minute planning, Tom and I realized that we needed clothes! YAY – another excuse to go shopping.
So we went to The Men’s Warehouse because I had a $100.00 gift certificate from a suit purchase a while back. We wanted ties! I found this beautiful plaid one which suits my academic taste and Tom picked a much louder, bolder tie to match his charming personality. We also found these amazing vests which we consider to be a more modern, cooler spinoff of a traditional suit (especially in this mid-ninety degree temperature we’ve been having). Then, to top it all off, I found this great pair of black Perry Ellis pants on sale for $30.00 at Macy’s! It was a good shopping day!
I have to say – this spontaneous planning is a whole lot of fun!
Here is a picture of the vests and ties. We can’t wait!

So sharp…love the ties! Congrats! This day will be equally as special and significant in your union!! Many blessings!
Brian- I struggled with whether the civil ceremony was going to be it’s own little wedding too…In a way it is; there will be witnesses, a photographer, and special clothes (Short, emerald dress for me and dressed up jeans for Ginger). My FMIL is trying to convince us to do a nice lunch after…but, I’m totally stealing your idea and telling her she can bring cupcakes and champagne instead…sounds perfect. Cupcakes are banned from our wedding reception (Ginger’s idea), so maybe I can have them walking around Dupont Circle. Love your clothes! You two are going to look great!
Thanks Tami! I can’t wait to update you on the day. It was wonderful!
I think that’s awesome, bringing cupcakes! Word of caution- eat something else too. The sugar from the champagne and the cupcakes might put you in a coma! HA! Trust me.
