Thanks to Lara Swanson Photography (aka the other co-founder of So You’re EnGAYed) for getting us these pictures.
The first wedding we had our very close friends and relatives read meaningful excerpts. The second wedding the dress was very meaningful and the legal ceremony was meaningful to my partner (so just being able to become legal somewhere close).
Why did we get legally married? We got this question a lot because as long as we live in Virginia our marriage wont be recognized so people wondered what was the point if we weren’t going to move to Maryland or DC. For me (Ciara) it was about the symbolism more than the actual legality. Growing up I was taught to believe that it was wrong for a person to be gay. It was important to me to be able to go somewhere where my relationship and ultimately my marriage was validated.
We were really lucky and had friends decorate the church and the reception area. I (Megan) love purple so almost all of the design elements were in purple. My (Megan) favorite comment about our wedding design was made by my college friend’s husband who spent the day decorating, he told his wife as they were leaving “I feel like I just got my butt kicked by my little pony.” One tiny thing we did was get the personalized M&Ms that had our names and the date of the wedding. In the second ceremony my favorite element was tying in the purple from the first ceremony in everybody’s clothes.
Our first wedding was traditional and PURPLE:). We had both the ceremony and the reception at the church I grew up in and my parents still attend. It was great because it was around the time our church was involved in the marriage equality so they had a great big rainbow flag we were able to take pictures in front of. Our second wedding was informal, small and nice, important parts of it, were the Wedding dress that I wish I would have just got the first time around and signing the marriage license.

where did you get your suit? it is absolutely amazing!! i am having the hardest time finding a suit that isn’t made for tall stick thin girls! i’m on the shorter side and have a woman’s body. i love that your suit doesn’t make you look super manly because i am looking for that but still having a feminine touch. plus i can’t find a white one anywhere! any advice would be so helpful. thank you and congrats to you both!!
