So I finally started making the paper flowers I am going to use in our bouquets and decided I would do a quick tutorial. I have to admit that these flowers are a bit more difficult to make than the last tutorial I did. However, once you make one and see how it all goes together they seem to get easier!
To make the paper roses you will need these things: wire floral stems, green florist tape, sheets of crepe paper, scissors, spray adhesive, and a toothpick (not pictured).
For the flowers you will need the crepe paper to be double sided. You can order special double sided crepe paper on the internet. I decided to go the cheap route and make it myself by spraying the paper with adhesive and folding it in half. Be sure to smooth out any wrinkles and allow it to dry for half an hour before using.
While the paper dries print out a couple flower templates. All you have to do is search on the internet for “paper roses template” and you will find many to choose from. I simply stapled the template to the crepe paper and cut out a bunch of petals all at once. Make sure you cut the petals so the grain of the paper is running vertical through the petal… this is very important for shaping! For this tutorial you will need to cut two sizes of petals as pictured below.
Once you have a bunch of them cutout you will need to shape the petals. Starting with the small petals simply place your thumbs in the middle of the top half of the petal and stretch the crepe paper to create a rounded shape. At this point you will see why cutting the petals with the grain of the paper going vertical. If you have cut it wrong the paper will not stretch at all.
Once you have rounded it on top curl the upper edges of the petal back around a tooth pick.
Here is a view of the three stages of shaping for the small petals.
Now do the same to the larger petals pulling out with your thumbs to create a rouned petal then wrap the edges back around a toothpick.
Here is what the large petals look like after shaping. This is the most tedious part of making this type of flower. I highly recommend bribing some friends to help assembly line style.
Now for the fun part! Take a small petal that hasn’t been shaped and wrap it around the wire stem with some florist tape.
Keep adding a few of these unshaped petals to form the base of the flower.
Then start attaching the small shaped petals one at a time securing each with florist tape.
At this point begin to attach the larger petals. Arrange the petals so they overlap two petals already attached.
Then just keep adding petals until you reach the desired size… and there you have it, the beginning of a bouquet!

Great tutorial. The paper roses are totally charming!
Thank you so much!
I think they are going to look great on our big day!
These are beautiful!! So elegant looking. I love the texture of the crepe paper in combination with the curves of the petals.
