Last fall I decided to undertake a long distance DIT (do it together) wedding project with my mom. For my mom’s own wedding, she and my grandfather made fabric bouquets, and I wanted to carry on the tradition of bonding over a handmade wedding project. We decided to make paper flower pomanders to hang above the dance floor in the museum’s sculpture barn. I think we will also make some tissue pom poms to fill the space in even more. Last weekend we made our first prototype, and I’ve got pictures to share!

(All images taken by me on my Droid)

These are the two types of flowers we used. I made the one on the left using Sar’s Paper Rose Tutorial. And, my mom made the one on the right based off of a kit available at Paper Source.

Deviating from my original concept, we ended up using 10 inch Styrofoam balls as the base.

For stems, we improvised with golf tees (that we happened to have on hand while experimenting), and adhered the paper petals to the tees with floral tape. In the future I plan to use less tape and leave more of the tee exposed.

Our first complete ball!

Before we inserted each paper flower into the ball, we used a spare golf tee to bore a hole in the syrofoam. Next, we coated the stem of the flower in glue and gently pushed it into the hole we had just made. As much as we tried, our imperfect flowers sometimes didn’t go into the holes flush against the ball. However, the slightly different heights caused by this “mistake” created even more texture, and I kinda like it better. Once we perfect the process, I’ll write a real, detailed tutorial for y’all!
