Cuff Link Proposal

My favorite part of proposing to Sam was how surprised she was.  She was so surprised, that for the first minute or so, she thought I was just suffering from low blood sugar.  I have a history of fainting and opened with “I can’t take this anymore!” while fumbling for something (a granola bar, she presumed) in my purse as we waited for our food at an Italian restaurant.

I’ll back up a little…

Sam and I had been dating for around six years and living together for four.  We had talked about getting married in detail- minus the where and when.  Our families and friends all knew we would eventually get married, and everyone (including Sam) assumed that she would be doing the proposing.  I love anything sparkly, so it seemed obvious to all concerned that Sam would get down on one knee, and I would accept a pretty, shiny ring.

That’s where the surprise came in.  I decided to propose to Sam with diamond cuff links.  After searching for the perfect pair unsuccessfully, I enlisted the help of a personal jeweler.  The process was actually really fun.  It involved emailing a picture and (my) description of Sam to help the jeweler understand her personal style and eventually finding the most beautiful pair of diamond earrings that were made into cuff links just for us.

Keeping secrets in general is not easy for me, and Sam and I live together!  So, after about two months of shopping around, meeting with the jeweler, generally acting squirrely each time I checked my email at home and then carrying the most expensive purchase I’d ever made around in my purse, I was ready to get it over with!  Which brings us back to the restaurant and “I can’t take this anymore!” while fumbling around in my purse for the box.  Sam responded with something along the lines of “Don’t worry- They’re going to bring us some bread!”

I managed to get the question out once the box was in her hand, and she said “Of course.”  We stayed at the restaurant for three more hours drinking champagne and saying “We’re engaged?” over and over while it sunk in.

Once we changed our Facebook statuses from “In a Relationship” to “Engaged” (the most official of engagement announcements), people immediately started asking to see my ring and asking Sam how she proposed.  So, everyone (even some people I thought would know better already) got a little lesson in gender presentation and false assumptions.  And Sam got diamonds!  Everybody wins!
