J’s friend is making our wedding cake. She works in a bakery and is a pastry chief. While I have never had her cake, I have had her banana pancakes which were scrumptious. I found the pictures of the wedding cake/cupcakes that she made for her sister’s wedding and now I am super excited about it.

My biggest problem has been finding a wedding cake design that looks like a carnival, but not like a child’s birthday party. So far I like little flagĀ garlands hung around the cake or lots of flags stuck in the cake. I also kind of want this cake now. It is so cheerful and gay inside.

I made cupcakes of that sort for Pride! They went over very well, but you do sort of have to have a talk with yourself before you eat them about how food coloring is in everything anyway and probably not really that bad for you. It’s intimidating to eat something that blue, you know?

Check out the link to Liz Marden cakes in Wilmington, DE for ideas and inspiration. A friend’s circus-themed wedding cake (which was DELICIOUS, a different flavor each layer) is featured in the video linked on the front page. It was fun, cute, and still weddingy!

@emily kate- I have always loved the artifical flavors. I think most of my childhood pictures I have a bright blue mouth from italian ices.

@Leanne- Thanks for the great tip! I really love the pennant layer.

You could go with a Big Top kind of design…make it a little goth, and it probably won’t look like a kid’s birthday. Although, I have to say, if you’re having a carnival theme and the cake looks fun and childish, what’s the harm? Kid stuff is generally lots of fun.
