I absolutely loved the way Tom proposed marriage to me. It was perfect! It was big, it was public, and it was in front of almost every single one of the most important people in my life. To keep with our holiday theme (We began dating on Cinco De Mayo in 2001 and became domestic partners on St. Patricks Day in 2008), he proposed to me on December 7, 2009 (Pearl Harbor Day), during our holiday cabaret called Hey That’s My Cake. The show is retooled every year by Tom (my husband) and Vinnie (our friend) with new themes and music with my involvement varying each show for the last 10 years. During the latter productions, I performed with them on stage as their percussionist.

During this particular Christmas version of the show, Tom and Vinne went off script towards the end. This is something they they do regularly so I didn’t think anything of it. They were discussing how long the two of us had been together and then Tom misspoke about out the actual date of our domestic partnership which made me a little mad at the time, perfect for clouding my perception of what was actually happening at that moment. I am sure Tom wishes that he had come up with that on his own, but in reality he confessed that he was just so nervous that he couldn’t think of the correct date on the spot. Then when I realized that he was proposing – I was so overwhelmed with emotions. I even started to back up out of the light for a second to process what was happening. It was wonderful and shocking and romantic and, well, you name it!

Vinnie crossed the stage to retrieve the hidden ring and gave it to Tom. I started crying. He proposed and got down on one knee. It took me seconds to say yes before grabbing him and lifting him to his feet to kiss me. The crowd roared. It was amazing. The night was intense, a party with friends and family. My friend Gina even captured the proposal with her camera, which we now have for the rest of our lives.
