When we looked at traditional wedding cakes, they didn’t feel like us. Pretty, yes, but for our wedding, not so much. Our gut reaction was, cake, yes, cutting a big traditional cake, no. Surprisingly, when I read more about it, I realized that the elaborate, tiered wedding cakes are a relatively new tradition. And in fact, piling different cakes on a table at a wedding is a fairly old custom. Well there you go, I guess we are kinda traditional after all. We are going to have a cake buffet with a bunch of different flavors with simple, homemade style decoration. And to top it off, we are going to have a Ben & Jerry’s cart on hand to serve up scoops of ice cream. Yum!

I’ve got a few DIY projects kicking around in my brain for the cake buffet. My plan is to put the cakes on stands of varying heights. I’m thinking about collecting vintage plates and glasses, and making the cake stands via this tutorial. I think I might also make little signs inspired by Mrs. Sparrow’s DIY Food Signs to indicate the different cake flavors.

Last week Ginger offered to take on a wedding task, and I immediately grabbed my wedding binder and flipped it open to a list of bakeries I had been compiling. To say she embraced the challenge is an understatement. She has informed me that she takes cake very seriously, and we will be attending a tasting every day we are home for Thanksgiving (because of course we will need some cake after that feast, right?). Something about a cake buffet and ice cream cart makes me so happy- can’t wait to see how this idea takes shape.
