Here are a few warnings to keep in mind when talking to your partner, family, friends or strangers about your wedding planning. In addition, I’ve added a few suggestions of things you may want to abide by based on my personal experience thus far :

  1. Never refer to wedding tasks as “chores,” even if they sometimes feel like chores.
  2. When asked how the wedding planning is going, smile and say, just great! If you start discussing your stress too much you are referred to as “bridzilla.” Even if you are a groom.
  3. Never ask your partner more than 5 times what he thinks the accent color should be. He will give you a dirty look.
  4. Expect everyone you invite to your wedding to come and do not be surprised if only a couple people can come, especially during a recession.
  5. Always send out thank-you cards immediately after receiving a gift because you may forget what they gave you (this is just an important one…. it hasn’t happened to me – luckily).
  6. You have to consider the fact that one of your wedding party members may have to step out of the wedding for some reason. There is not a lot out there in cyberspace to help you with this problem if it happens. Therefore, in advance you should talk about it with your partner and set a plan of action in the off chance it does occur. Would you replace the person? If so, with who? Would that “back-up” person be offended, etc.?
  7. Schedule a day that is wedding-free.  It’s good for your love life and your sanity too!
  8. Know that this day is all about you and your mate. While it is important to listen to family and friends, listen to each other more.
  9. You have to learn that you cannot control every single detail. Accept the fact that things will probably go wrong.
  10. If you need help, ask someone! People are more than willing to lend a helping hand, I promise. And hey – that’s what your “attendants” are for!
