For months I have been looking forward to my friend’s wedding–because of their signature cocktails.

I had been raving about this fantasic idea Alex and I had for our wedding–signature cocktails–when my dear childhood best friend quickly informed that they was having signature cocktails at their wedding and it was like, so hip. I couldn’t help but laugh and inquire further. She liked martinis and their wedding colors were blue and orange so their venue designed two cocktails for them: a (lethal) blue vodka martini with orange peel and a lighter orange vodka cocktail with lemon peel. Sadly, I was too busy buzzing around (I was a bridesmaid!) to get a photo but they were served prior to the main meal in tumbler glasses, on offer with a choice red or white wine as well as four local ales in bottles.

Not only was it a fun way for everyone to feel like their were part of the gang with a signature martini, but it was more cost effective than an open bar. In fact, I have seen signature cocktails listed on more than one 10-ways-to-Save lists from notable wedding magazines (The Knot, Martha Stewart). Something to consider…

As for Alex and I, we set out creating our signature cocktails: one of each of us and one for our union:

The Erica: A pomegranate Absolut Los Angeles Martini, with a twist of lime

  • Just reminiscent enough of feminine high heels to be a classic cocktail, but with California roots
  • Or, the Bette-wins-my-heart-by-kicking-Carrie’s-ass cocktail.

The Alex: An Apple Mint Mojito, with extra mint

  • Sweet, fresh and sexy, I have visions of steamy love affairs at dusk on Southern verandas in 90 degree weather with 100% humidity. Alex may be British but she could have seduced me in the South any day.

Lovefest (otherwise known as the Ericalex): Strawberry Mango Daiquiri

  • Strawberry, for our public code word for “you’re really adorable right now and I really want to kiss you, but it’s so not safe to do so.”
  • Mango, for me: I’ve never been able to let go of Sascha Rice’s Mango Kiss (2004)—it was part of my baby-dyke education.
  • Rum, for Alex: You just don’t get between that girl and her rum.

Anyone else doing signature cocktails? How are  you deciding?!

We are also debating signature cocktails as a way to keep cost down. I really want an Absolute Sunburst, which is Absolute Ruby Red Vodka, Razzmatazz, and sour mix. It tastes exactly like grapefruit juice and I love it.

Yum… and a great way to save money! I think it’s great that you stuck with rum and vodka because they are pretty universally liked.
