No Hawaii for Us

No Hawaii for Us

*By Roxy*

Well, my dear George and I have been fantasizing about a two-week-long, relaxing, romantic honeymoon since we decided to get married. We initially came up with a budget of $3,000 for this extravaganza; each of us taking $1,000 out of our savings and using $1,000 of what we’ll assume we’ll get for our wedding. (George hails from New Jersey, where it’s apparently the custom to show up with a card containing a check — no gifts at the reception!) But then the economy kept getting worse, and our cat George got sick (she’s better now), and we bought our wedding attire. Then I learned this week that the magazine I work for is up for sale. You get the picture. So now it looks like the plan is to spend under $1,000, drive, and save our pennies for the next inevitable rainy day.

But we need help! We’re looking for a nice vacation spot less than a ten-hour drive from NYC. Anyone have any bright ideas? We want gay-friendly but not gay-mania (ie not P-Town or Fire Island), and a beach would be lovely. Please post your suggestions in the comments.

There are other beautiful areas on Cape Cod that aren’t P-Town. Falmouth is lovely and not a far drive from NYC. I also love Wellfleet and Truro on the Cape. Truro is cool b/c it’s right next to P-town but has some affordable motel-style accommodations right across from the beach, and in my mind the best camping on the Cape. You can still go into P-town for great dinners and a little gay life if you wish. Depending on when your wedding is, it still might be hard to get out of there spending under $1K, though.

I’d suggest Rehoboth and Dewey Beaches in Delaware. Some decent nightlife, a lively but not over the top gay scene… and not too far from Ocean City,MD and Assateague Island.

I would try either somewhere else in Cape Cod, which has already been suggested. Or, maybe Newport, Rhode Island.

Vermont Vermont Vermont! Seriously, so idyllic and everyone is friendly and there are a million amazing little b&bs to explore. I love Vermont.

  5. My choice is also Cape Cod, which is already suggested. Nice blog, keep up the good work!

George and I talked it over last night and I think we are going to try Cape Cod. I am still whining and lamenting my dreams of warm breezes and lush foliage, but George keeps reminding me that, of course, what’s important is that we’re together.

For the folks who know: Any particular places to stay that are best? Should we go for a hotel or try to rent a small house?

    You guys are the best!

It isn’t Cape Cod, but check out Kate’s Lazy Meadow in the Catskills. I spent Memorial Day Weekend there a few years back and still dream about how relaxing it was. The prices aren’t too bad, and it is such a fun little inn.
